Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (67 AD - 160 AD) was a Tanna of the fourth generation and student of Rabbi Akiva.
Many of the laws in his name are quoted in the Mishnah (compiled by Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, one of his most important students), where he is known as Rabbi Shimon without mentioning his father's name. The midrashic-halachic connection "Sifrei" is attributed in the Gemara to the Beit Midrash of Rashbi.
